Your brass teacher

One teacher at the Thumpoly showroom for trumpet, trombone, bugle calls, and marching percussion. Lessons stay small so air, buzz, and the stand part can be corrected in the room, or on live video with the mouthpiece in frame.

Choose a pathway

Trumpet and trombone are brass. Bugle calls sit with school and police band training. Side drum and bass drum are marching percussion.

Breath, buzz, and band parts

Lessons start with a steady first note, then the school part you already have. Short daily practice protects the lips better than one long weekend session.

  • Breath, embouchure, and producing a steady first note
  • Simple tunes, scales, and reading band parts
  • Trumpet, trombone, or the brass instrument you already play at school
  • Care, mouthpieces, and a practice plan that does not strain the lips

Trumpet or trombone

Match the lesson to the school part. Try a student model in the lesson if you need your own horn.

Trumpet

Three valves and a bright school-band voice. A common first brass instrument.

  • Mouthpiece buzz before the full horn
  • First five notes and a scale
  • Valve oil and a cloth from week one

Trombone

A slide instead of valves. Suits students who already hold the school trombone part.

  • Slide positions and a steady air stream
  • The school part as soon as the tone holds
  • Slide cream and a mute for home practice

Typical first term

Weeks 1–2Buzz, long tones, first five notes
Weeks 3–6A scale and the school concert line
Weeks 7–12Stronger tone and a short solo phrase

School/Police Band Training

Coaching for school bands, Kerala Police Band, and other ceremonial or marching brass parts, including bugle calls. Bring the call or the stand part you already have. This is a Thumpoly class, not an official recruitment centre.

Kerala Police Band

Parade brass and the calls the Kerala Police Band uses on duty.

Tone, endurance, and the concert or parade line you already carry. Say if you are preparing for a band vacancy or already play in the unit.

  • Trumpet, trombone, or the horn on your stand
  • Short daily practice that protects the lips before parade week
  • Bring the part or the call you need to pass

Ceremonial brass

Clean tone and a part that sits in a formal brass line.

We match the lesson to the ceremonial part you bring. The first month is air, a reliable attack, and a phrase you can play standing for a long duty.

  • Steady attack and a lip-friendly routine
  • Scales and the ceremonial line on your stand
  • Write ceremonial brass on the enquiry form

Marching brass

Endurance, pitch, and a part that holds outdoors.

Marching work is often longer and louder than a school concert. We build endurance in short sessions and keep the part in tune when you play on your feet.

  • Outdoor endurance without straining the face
  • The marching part you already have, or a starter line
  • Write marching brass and your instrument on the form

Band-part coaching

Breath, a steady first note, and the stand part you need to pass.

Lessons stay on embouchure and reading. Bring the vacancy or rehearsal part. We do not name the unit on the page; say which band you mean on the form.

  • Embouchure and long tones before volume
  • Reading a band part, not a hobby piece
  • Showroom or live video if you cannot travel each week

Bugle calls

Bugle is a brass voice with no valves. It stays on this pathway, with the police and school calls you need to stand and play.

Bugler

Calls, a clean attack, and enough air for outdoor duty.

The lesson is buzz, the first open notes, and the police calls you need to stand and play. A short daily routine protects the lips.

  • Mouthpiece buzz and a steady first note
  • Parade calls, kept separate from a full trumpet syllabus
  • Bring the bugle if you already have one

Marching Percussion Training

Side drum and bass drum are percussion. They keep the parade pulse for school and police band work. Kit lessons are on Drum Classes.

Side drum

Marching snare: rudiments, a tight roll, and a pulse the line can hear.

Stick grip, a metronome, and the side-drum patterns used on parade. A pad is enough at home. The lesson kit can take the first class.

  • Grip, counting, and a steady march tempo
  • Rolls and the Police Band figures you bring
  • Sticks if you have them; we have a pair if not

Bass drum

The pulse of the parade. Clean strokes that the brass line can lock to.

Bass drum for Police Band Kerala is time. We set a stroke you can keep for a long march and a pattern that matches the side drum.

  • Stroke, stance, and a tempo you can hold
  • Playing with a side-drum part
  • Write bass drum on the form so we set the slot
