Few instruments are as rewarding as the violin. It can carry a Carnatic kriti, a church hymn, a film song or a Western classical piece, and it fits naturally into Kerala's rich music culture. Choosing your first violin, or the right size for a growing child, can still feel confusing. This guide explains what to look for and what you can find at Presto Forte in Thumpoly, Alappuzha.

Step 1: Choose the right violin size

Violins come in fractional sizes so that players of every age can hold the instrument comfortably and reach the notes in tune. The most common sizes are:

• 1/2 size – usually for younger children starting lessons.
• 3/4 size – for older children and young students who are not yet ready for a full-size instrument.
• 4/4 (full size) – for teenagers and adults.

The size that fits depends on arm length, not just age. The easiest way is to let a teacher check, or to bring the student to our showroom so we can try different sizes together. A violin that is too big makes playing in tune harder and can discourage a beginner.

Step 2: Think about who is playing

A first-time learner needs a violin that is easy to set up, holds its tuning and comes ready to play. As a student progresses, tone quality and responsiveness matter more. Tell us the player's level and the style of music they are learning, and we will suggest suitable options.

Step 3: Acoustic or electric?

Most students start on an acoustic violin. An electric violin can be connected to an amplifier or sound system, which suits stage programmes, and many can be practised quietly with headphones.

Don't forget the accessories

Strings wear out with regular practice. We stock replacement sets such as the Alice A-703, Ostar V130 and Ziko 133 violin string sets. A tuner also helps new players stay in tune between lessons.

Caring for a violin in Kerala's climate

Kerala's monsoon humidity and hot afternoons are hard on wooden instruments. Keep your violin in its case when you are not playing, away from damp walls, direct sunlight and strong air-conditioning vents. Loosen the bow hair after every session and wipe rosin dust off the strings and body with a soft dry cloth.
